What is craio

what is craniosacral therapy

Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy (BCST) is a gentle and profound body treatment  which involves a light touch.

It is gentle and non-intrusive such that it can be used on all,  including newborns, the elderly and pregnant women past their first trimester.

From birth, any stresses, strains and trauma that life throws at us are stored in our bodies, a record of past experiences. For some, these past events may then present themselves later on as physical symptoms, such as backache, migraine or gut problems. In addition, others may display feelings of depression and anxiety.

BCST has its roots in osteopathy and developed from the research done by the American osteopath, Dr William Sutherland in the early 1900s. He discovered rhythmic movements in and around the bones in the head and body. His observations led him to realise that there was a direct correlation between the restriction of this  movement and  physical, mental and emotional ill -health and  for the body's ability to self- heal. It is these movements and restrictions that are felt in CST and as these restrictions dissipate, health, wellbeing and balance are restored.

Working together with the body's natural ability to self- repair, BCST  enables the client to access the underlying health that is present in all of us and facilitates the letting go of these held patterns.

In a typical BCST session, you would lie fully clothed on a treatment couch and I would gently place my hands on your body. The treatment lasts for about one hour.

The Craniosacral Therapy Association (CSTA) have created a short clip which explains what to expect during and after a treatment:

I am a Biodynamic Craniosacral therapist (BCST), gaining my qualification from the Craniosacral Therapy Educational Trust (CTET) in London. I am a registered  member of the Craniosacral Therapy Association(RCST) and as such adhere to their code of ethics and standards in my practice.

Clients have included those with sinusitis, dental problems, migraine, back and neck aches, menstrual issues, arthritis, grief and depression. However this list is not exhaustive - craniosacral therapy is beneficial in all kinds of situations, physical, mental and emotional.

A qualified dentist and self-taught artist, my own life experiences, both professional and personal, make me ideally suited to empathise with my clients. Some come just a handful of times and others have become regular attendees, depending on their needs.

I have myself experienced severe trauma when my husband died unexpectedly and suddenly leaving me with three young children. BCST helped me enormously some years later when I was ready to process this unimaginable and far-reaching experience.

Arrriving in Shriti's treatment space is always so special as I know I will be in good hands for the duration of my treatment. Her ability to recall my history and keep it in mind during the session always helps the treatments have a deeper effect. I always feel very relaxed and go with the work Shriti is doing and the results of that are very positive. I started seeing Shriti because I had headaches that I couldn't find a solution to and as I progressed with the work we did together, the better I felt. My physical history is complex due to a severe leg injury with emotional trauma and the experience I had with Shriti's treatment really helped to realign me as a whole. I can highly recommend her for being a brilliant biodynamic craniosacral therapist and love her informed, gentle and intuitive approach.

I started seeing Shriti once a week after I had a seizure. Although I had already seen a neurologist, I knew I needed more to ease me closer back to myself and to realise a way through my anxiety all the while working a way through my grief after the loss of our daughter. I saw Shriti regularly over a period of months and felt a clear sense of release and lightness after each session. Even though the process had a tendency to open some of my emotional bubbles, I was always left with an innate sense of openness and peace at the end. A bit like an unblocking. This is in part due to the welcome haven Shriti creates that feels like a safe place to settle into the treatment she provides, but also knowing I was in steady, empathic wise hands.

Visiting Shriti once per week was always such a relaxing and comforting experience. She made me feel so peaceful and comfortable that I was able to relax and heal mentally and physically. I found it helpful that Shriti had endured similar experiences to my own- it meant there was someone I could talk to that would understand what I was feeling. I decided to start my craniosacral sessions as I was struggling with IBS as a result of stress and anxiety. Shriti always listened to my queries and gave very helpful responses. To this day I still use multiple techniques that I learnt from my sessions. I am so grateful for Shriti and the amazing sessions I had- I am so much more relaxed and reflective than I was before! I cannot recommend her enough- not only is she an amazing craniosacral therapist but she also becomes an attentive and caring friend.
A.C. Aged 18

Shriti began treating my daughter, T, with post-chemotherapy treatment for childhood cancer at 23 months old. We'd had a brief(but successful) experience
with children's craniosacral therapy before meeting Shriti. Still we were looking for someone closer to home who would be attuned to T's individual experiences and needs.
Shriti's due diligence in talking through my daughter's historical experiences left no stone unturned and her compassion in this away from my daughter, to save her any further trauma meant a great deal to me as a mum. She approaches each session from a child-led perspective, allowing my daughter to explore her surroundings whilst receiving treatment in a very relaxed and nurturing environment. Her approach to the work is fluid to T's responses; it's uncanny how T brings the session to an end on her own terms each and every time, right at the 20-minute mark and Shriti has always followed her lead.
I never fail to be moved by watching Shriti work with my daughter and the outcome of the treatment is undisputable; for example, just one of the outcomes is that Shriti has given my daughter the strength and ability to go from screaming and panicking when even just hearing about hospitals and checkups, to saying hello to the Ultrasound technician and chatting away whilst they scan her. This was instantaneous and utterly floored me.
I cannot recommend Shriti enough to those looking for a craniosacral expert to work with their children. T now looks forward to her sessions which book-end her 6 monthly cancer checkups. We hope to continue working with Shriti for as long as possible!
